In 1969 the newly built sloop 'Clearwater' first visited Beacon. A small
band of local youngsters and oldsters organized a welcoming festival to
support the valiant crew of the sloop and to help spread Clearwater's environmental
message. Thus began the Beacon
Sloop Club.

CEO of Frost
Valley YMCA. Frost Valley teams with the Ruth Gottscho
Kidney Foundation to bring children with kidney disease to summer camp.

We interview Katherine Arnoldi, author of several books
including the graphic novel The
Amazing "True" Story
of a Teenage Single Mom. Arnoldi has developed the organization CollegeMomMagazine.org to
provide information about how to navigate the challenges of continuing
one's education while mothering. In as many venues as possible, including
homeless shelters, she spreads the magical words that changed her life
as a teenage single mom — "financial aid." Arnoldi describes
her favorite cartoon of a mother dressed in graduation robes holding her
daughter. The caption reads, "Thank you, Mom, for taking me to your graduation
so I could imagine it for myself."
Several mothers who went back to school later in life call in and share
their experiences of being role models for their children simply
by their example of curiosity, perseverance, and enjoyment of learning.

We often say that "Our children are our future," but do we act as if this
is so? Given that we live in a time of unprecedented global,
political, social, and personal challenge, what are we teaching our children
to help them live well? Discussion includes children with special needs
and awareness of teaching our values by our example.
No
Child Left Inside is a movement to give kids the time-honored opportunity
to enjoy nature. Enjoying nature reduces children's loneliness, depression,
and attention problems. Nature teaches without effort lessons of life
and death, beauty, and appreciation.
A listener advocates teaching local sustainability and supporting CSAs.
Community Supported Agriculture farms allow families to buy into a share
of the produce before the farm season. Most CSAs are completely organic,
all are local. Find

How do you get over a grudge or betrayal? How do you get
on with your life after you have been hurt? We interview Amber
Chand, once a refugee from her home in Uganda, now
the director of a non-profit organization that helps refugee women world-wide.
Listeners contribute with their stories of turning despair to
inspiration by simply taking action.
